Description
A chronic autoimmune disease affecting salivary glands and tear glands. Sjogren’s (SHOW-grins) syndrome is a disorder of your immune system identified by its two most common symptoms — dry eyes and a dry mouth.The condition often accompanies other immune system disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
Very common (More than 3 million cases per year in US)

Often requires lab test or imaging
Common for ages 35-50
More common in females
Family history may increase likelihood
Urgent medical attention recommended in severe cases
Two main symptoms are:
- Dry Eyes – itchy, burning or gritty eyes
- Dry Mouth– dryness in mouth makes difficult to speak and swallow
Other common symptoms are:
- Dry throat
- Vaginal and skin dryness
- Sore or cracked tongue
- Dry nose
- Swollen salivary glands — particularly the set located behind your jaw and in front of your ears
- Skin rashes or dry skin
- Vaginal dryness
- Persistent dry cough
- Prolonged fatigue
- Joint pain
Currently there is no cure for Sjögren’s syndrome, treatment can improve the various symptoms and prevent complications.
